Stellenbosch, South Africa on a spring day in the late afternoon. Only a few tourists and some students can be seen on the streets. The two characters have just come out of a grocery store where they met by chance. The girl is a young woman, fashionably dressed and beautiful. The young man appears serious. He's obviously not of a poor origin, as seen by an expensive watch and other subtle accessories. His clothes don't particularly point in either way, they are not particularly flashy, nor in any bad shape.

NADIA: You don’t want them to see us together!

ADAM: Why not?

NADIA: I’m colored

ADAM: Ah of course, sucks huh?

NADIA: Very much

ADAM: I’ll take my chances

NADIA: But what about my reputation? I can’t be seen with a white guy

ADAM: Cause you’re colored

NADIA: Cause I’m colored.

ADAM: Haha, alright, let’s go, but where?

NADIA: I don’t know, sit somewhere and talk, go in the sunshine? I don’t know

ADAM: Alright, let’s go hit up the sunshine. (pause) yeah, let’s go sit on the stairs.

NADIA: Hold this for me (She holds the water bottle in his direction)

ADAM: No! I’m already carrying your damn chips, carry your own water.

NADIA: Come on! Pleeeeease?

ADAM: You’re a wimp, you know that? (He laughs)

NADIA: I’m not a wimp (she smiles, then pouts in an obviously fake manner)

They sit down on the top of the steps of the municipality building.

ADAM: They’ve never seen a white guy sit with a colored girl! (He nods towards 3 young white men walking up the stairs, all looking at them)

She laughs

NADIA: It’s cause I’m colored.

ADAM: Probably. (he can’t help but chuckle)

ADAM: (Serious tone) Would you say you’re racist?

NADIA: Yeah, I hate all you white people (she grins at him)

ADAM: Aww, shucks. But seriously?

NADIA: No, I don’t think so.

Pause

NADIA: What about you?

ADAM: I dunno… maybe a little bit. I can’t help it.

NADIA: Yeah, of course everyone’s a bit racist-

ADAM: Like stereotypes that somewhere nag at the back of your hea-

NADIA: Exactly.

ADAM: Except for with you, of course.

NADIA: Cause I’m colored.

ADAM: Obviously. (pause) or because you’re you.

NADIA: Not with you, you’re still all white to me. Well, more like a pink. I’m… caramel.

ADAM: What? Come on, we have to at least get vanilla. (He puts his arm on hers, crossing the two so both skins can be seen clearly) See, I’m Vanilla, that guy that walked past before was black and you’re… you’re hot chocolate.

NADIA: I’m not hot chocolate! (she playfully hits his arm)

ADAM: I’ll call you Nesquik from now on!

NADIA: Oh shut up. Let’s go inside, it’s getting cold. (she nods at a small café nearby)

ADAM: Yeah, let’s.

She accidentally drops the water bottle

NADIA: Pick that up

ADAM: Haha, sure, let me just bend over so you can give me a small spank on the ass ok?

NADIA: Come on, pick it up.

ADAM: No, pick it up yourself, you wimp.

She picks it up and they move inside. They find a table and sit down. She looks at him somewhat fascinated.

NADIA: I like your eyes.

ADAM: My eyes?

NADIA: Yes. What are they, Green? Bl-

ADAM: I’m never quite sure, sometimes they’re green sometimes they’re blue.

NADIA: Mine too, sometimes my eyes are brown, sometimes they’re green.

ADAM: And sometimes you’re white?

NADIA: Sometimes…
(pause)

NADIA: I’m moving out of res next week.

ADAM: I thought you’re only getting a flat next year?

NADIA: I am, I’m moving in with a friend in Cape Town

ADAM: Is she getting that annoying?

NADIA: It’s not even her.

ADAM: What then?

NADIA: I was accused of stealing

ADAM: What?!

NADIA: Yus! I accidentally got some clothes from one girl in the washing and she accused me of stealing them. I even gave them back to her before she said anything! It’s- you see- I didn’t steal anything. After, the huismoeder and the girl that’s accusing me went to my room and searched all my stuff. They went through all my clothes. And then this.. she would say that this and that was stolen. I had receipts for everything. It makes me so furious! And you know what? Today I got a message from my friend that there is a note on my door. “All coloreds need to get out of res”. And a friend of mine got a “You’re next”.

ADAM: Jesus Christ! Wer-

NADIA: and she says I stole her jogging pants. When do I ever wear jogging pants?! And the huismoeder said that she couldn’t believe that one student had so many clothes! I was so angry, I told her that she should see my home. I cou-

ADAM: Was the girl white?

NADIA: Ja

ADAM: And the huismoeder?

NADIA: Ja

ADAM: All white?

NADIA: Ja

ADAM: Fucking hell

NADIA: I’m not used to this racism. I went to an almost all white school. I’m so angry!

ADAM: I can imagine.

NADIA: I hate this.. I really don’t want to go back to res tonight

ADAM: Well, lemme know if you need an emergency couch or something.

NADIA: Haha, fuck you, you can sleep on the couch, I’ll sleep in the bed.

ADAM: I have a queen sized bed, we can both sleep in bed

NADIA: Let me just get some condoms!

ADAM: On second thought, I dunno, you might steal my sheets.

NADIA: Hah, yes

ADAM: And you’re colored.

NADIA: That’s true, I am colored.
